4.9.5 Upper Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge . 4.9.6 Van Loon Wildlife Area . Van Loon Wildlife Area originated as a lease project in 1948 and was known then as McGilvary Bottoms. Fee acquisition began in 1957 with the purchase of 758 acres from the William Van Loon estate. The property contains six historic McGilvray arch truss bridges [exit DNR] over the Black River built circa 1892. The wildlife area has a walking trail that is named either McGilvray Road for an early settler to the area or the Seven Bridges Road due to the seven bridges that are on the trail. Five of the old bridges remain and a sixth was brought in.
